Years ago when I booked to see a Hypnotherapist for the first time, I feared hypnotherapy, but at the same time was sceptical of it really working. I had previously seen a psychoanalyst and the treatment hadn’t fully worked because I was still having panic attacks. After 10 sessions of Hypnotherapy, my panic attacks suddenly disappeared and I was shocked the first time that the panic attack didn’t hit me. Eventually, I wasn’t waiting for a panic attack to happen again, the feelings that had caused these had been released by hypnosis.
I remember when seeing the Hypnotherapist, that he had said if only I would let my conscious mind get out of the way my treatment would work quicker. Some part of me was trying to analyse how the Hypnotherapy was working. Probably because I had been brought up with a scientific mind.
Since then I have looked at a scientific way of proving that Hypnosis works and came up with a couple of measures.
If I sit comfortably in a chair and go into a state of hypnosis. I can hit the state of hypnosis by just closing my eyes, as I have been there that many times. I then suggest to myself that my arm is raising gradually, I may imagine that a ballon is tied to my arm. Eventually, my arm starts to rise just like a rachet, rather than me consciously lifting my arm. It would be hard for anybody to raise their arm this slowly and the instructions for the arm raising come from the subconscious rather than the conscious mind.
If you could imagine wanting to achieve a particular goal, if you put the suggestions into your subconscious mind, they are eventually achieved over time. The arm levitation is a quick achievement of a goal, that is visible consciously, other goals may take much longer and it is sometimes difficult for people to see the cause and effect.
The number of times I have heard clients who have come to see me say that they are really relaxed. But years ago when I used to connect them up to a biofeedback machine, I used to see their heartbeat on a graph gradually drop from 80 bpm to 60 bpm. Many people just aren’t as relaxed as they would like to think they are. I thought it was pretty conclusive evidence to show clients, that Hypnotherapy wasn’t all in their minds on a graph. The only issue was the uncomfortable feeling of the clamps on their fingers.

A number of years ago a client came to see me, because they were concerned about having a knee operation while under a local anaesthetic. I did one session of Hypnotherapy. They listened daily to the tailor-made recording I provided on a CD and successfully had the operation. The client was having another knee operation in the future. I always tell my clients on the initial contact, how many sessions it can take and what they need to do to achieve results with Hypnotherapy. It can take from 1 to 5 sessions of Hypnotherapy and daily use of a tailor-made Hypnotherapy recording, between sessions. How long have you smoked? People who are desperate to stop smoking, often shift that behaviour to another addiction. If you stop smoking without dealing with the feelings that made you smoke in the first place, then you are liable to replace that behaviour with overeating. Overeating can be as damaging to the health as smoking.

However from my own experiences when I was suffering from panic attacks, I was willing to listen to the recording twice a day on a bad day. It doesn’t cost any money or much time to keep fit on a daily basis. Before I get in the car I always ask myself if I can walk or cycle before I do that. Whenever I am walking around Dinnington and Anston, I can’t believe the number of people driving around in cars, I suspect 50% of those journeys could be made on foot or by cycle. A brisk 20/30 minute walk is good for the heart and helps to burn off excess calories and can be relaxing.
When I was working at HSBC in Sheffield, I used to like the 1.5 mile walk every morning from the train station to Griffin house and back every day. It also allowed me to collect my thoughts on the way into work and back out every day. It’s possible to meditate while walking and calm the mind. Walking also reduces stress.
There was a period when I was working around the country when I was younger and it used to disrupt my going to the gymnasium. I have since found a much better and regular way to exercise every day. This can be done at home or in any hotel room. Three times a day I do situps and press ups. I do 3 x 20 situps and press ups before breakfast, before my lunch and then before my evening meal.
This routine of sit ups and press ups takes me very little time and keeps my stomach and chest trim. I would recommend a gradual build up if you aren’t used to exercising. For the first week do 10 sit ups and press ups three times a day, the next week 20 situps and 20 press ups three times a day, increase in increments of 10 every week. Eventually, you will be doing 3 x 20 sit ups and press ups three times a day.
I put my feet under a heavy object like a chair or you can purchase a device to put under the door to help you to do situps, which is very cheap.
People make excuses why they don’t have the time to exercise. But the average person watches TV for 4 hours every day or a similar amount of time on social media.
Exercising, should be fun and not a chore. You could run, swim, play football or whatever makes you tick. Buy an exercise video or even join a class.
Find a daily exercise routine you enjoy to do and it will improve your wellbeing, reduce stress and burn off excess calories.

I have been working with clients as far back as 2001. My first success with a customer was for fear of flying. My service is 110% confidential. Clients are only asked to give a written recommendation if they feel comfortable going public about it. I can limit the testimonial to just their name or even less. I have been working with individuals and organisations since 2001 to better deal with stress, enabling them to become healthier and more efficient. I know the worst case scenario of working for a large multi-national organisation, when I suffered a nervous breakdown when working in London.

I went into the theory of stress management but also gave people solutions. The 2nd group who came to see me were really looking forward to the session after hearing from the first group.
One of the things that came out of this course, was that those on the shop floor were subject to as much stress as those in office environments. Most companies seem more bothered about their executive workers than those who do the physical work in the company.

Positive self talk
I first came across the power of self-talk when I first started suffering from panic attacks back in the 1990’s. In some areas of my life, I was using positive self-talk without even thing about it. However, in other areas of my life, my self-talk was poor.
I wasn’t particularly good at sport at school, due to my size. However, I was half decent at cross-country running. When I left school I started running regularly. I set myself a goal of completing the Sheffield full marathon.
I would go out running 6 miles most nights, whatever the weather. Completing a 13 mile run on most Sunday morning’s. After completing a number of half marathons, the Nottingham full Marathon. I finally completed the Sheffield Marathon in 3 hours 10 minutes. I beat the first lady in and came 138th.
After working in London I started to suffer from panic attacks. My panic attacks only got worse after moving back into a desk based job in Sheffield. After a course of Hypnotherapy treatment, my panic attacks disappeared. I suffered from a feeling of loneliness that had caused these panic attacks.
After my Hypnotherapy treatment, I started to work on my self-talk. I purchased a course by a Daniel A Simmons. The course was called the “Realization system”. This was based on Emile Coue’s theory. Emile Coue was most famous for, “Every day in every way I am getting better and better.”
I then came across self-talk tapes by a Shad Helmstetter. Shad had created a number of self-talk tapes to play daily. These self-talk tapes could be listened to while eating your breakfast, having a shower or shaving. Daily repeated listening to these tapes was a type of Hypnotherapy, without the trance. Gradually behaviours and beliefs change as you listen to these self-talk tapes while doing other things.
Shad Helmstetter has moved thing on from his first book. “What you say when you talk to yourself” and his tapes. He has recently published a number of new books. Shad now streams his affirmations recordings for a monthly fee.

I do my own version of self-talk recordings and add questions into the mix.
A few years ago I came across Trish Hatley who had created an album of positive self-talk songs. So far I have only found Trish doing good singing affirmations.
Trish is a swing singer in California. She was going through problems with her voice and used positive affirmations to help her. She then had an epiphany and decided to create an album of positive self-talk songs.
My belief is that singing, positive affirmations are more powerful and enjoyable than just talking them. Singing the positive affirmations certainly, creates more feeling and drives these affirmations deep into the subconscious mind. Just add the album onto your mobile phone. You can listen where ever you are in the house or on the move.
I think singing positive affirmations could be an important breakthrough for the future. The melody along with the positive affirmations is going to be more effective than just singing affirmations. Have you ever had your favourite song going around in your head, long after you listened to it on the radio? I remember when we used to have Vinyl records and repeating my favourite songs, they used to stick in my head. The trouble is the words to many of these songs from my youth weren’t that good. I am now much more careful what songs I listen to. Remember “Ghost town” by the Specials.

Sing ask and it is given.
I am certainly going to look at singing affirmations as a more productive way to achieve goals. I had Trish’s album a couple of years before I started to listen to it daily.
Singing versus talking affirmations
My original question was. Is it better to sing or talk positive affirmations? For me, it has to be singing positive affirmations or listening to them in that form. I love ballroom dancing and the swing music really does it for me. However, other people may not be so keen on affirmations being sung. What do you think?

I have just come across another survey suggesting that 80% of those between 40 and 60 are overweight, drink too much alcohol or don’t exercise enough. There is no talk of smoking in the headlines either. Yes take surveys with a pinch of salt, but walk along any High St and you see the picture for yourself.
People say they don’t have enough time to eat healthily or exercise, but the average Brit spends 4 hours a day watching TV and how many hours a day playing around on social media.
Why not walk a mile or cycle to the shop rather than getting the car out. I used to prepare a salad the night before when I worked at HSBC in Sheffield, it took me no more than 10 minutes and saved me a fortune in purchasing sandwiches. You don’t need to go to a gym to keep fit. Whether at home or staying away in hotels while working. Three lots of situps and press ups every day keeps you trim. Build up slowly, though.
Find a moderate, exercise route you enjoy. Running, Walking, Swimming, Football, Dancing etc.
Being overweight, not exercising enough or drinking too much will result in heart disease and diabetes 2 in the long term and many other diseases. I just wish the NHS would tackle the cause of many illnesses rather than dealing with the effect after. In the long term our tax money would be more efficiently used.
Other surveys have said that 25% of British people are overweight and 25% are obese. Not great that 50% of the population have a weight issue.
Most of the above are about choices people make, rather than something they have to live with.
If you are willing to accept responsibility for your own life, then Hypnotherapy could be the way forward for you.
The most important thing to do every day, is to learn to relax properly. Hypnotherapy will certainly help with this, this will reduce your heart rate. You will also find more clarity in your mind. You will make better decisions.
While in a Hypnotic trance, suggestions made to you have a greater effect on you. Suggestions can be made to control your weight, exercise more, improve your lifestyle etc.
I remember back in 1990 working on the road and in London and drinking double the government’s guidelines of about 20 units a week. Following Hypnotherapy treatment, my drinking reduced 50% to safe levels. Since that time my drinking has petered out. I can have a couple of drinks, then not drink again for months. I have saved a fortune in money, but also improved my health at the same time.
